Fire Department

Open until filled

Apprenticeship is a unique, part-time training through which individuals acquire the trade and craft skills and knowledge of firefighting, emergency first responder in medical, rescue, hazardous materials and other related disciplines. Training combines daily on-the-job instruction in manipulative skills with periodic classroom (related) instruction in technical subjects related to work requirements of the Centralia Fire Department. The training design provides for learning all required practical and theoretical skills and knowledge for the required disciplines of the Centralia Fire Department. Practical aspects of work are mastered on the job as apprentices are rotated through all phases of this particular occupation. Theoretical aspects of work are mastered during related subject’s instruction in the classroom either provided by Centralia Fire Department staff or other outside agencies. Related instruction continues throughout the apprenticeship. This arrangement of on-the-job and classroom instruction is a standard part of becoming a Certified Regular Part Time Employee. It ensures the individual’s employability and guarantees competent workers for the fire department by providing for learning the complete range of skills and knowledge during training.

How Apprenticeship Program Operates.

Those who are chosen to serve as an apprentice will be placed on a list to fill shift vacancies. Apprentice may also be called upon when manpower is determined to be needed by the Fire Chief or shift commander for special assignments approved by the City Manager. Apprentice may also be called upon during larger scale incidents where additional manpower is determined to be needed by the incident commander. Apprentice shall not automatically respond to incidents without proper notification from the Shift Commander or Fire Chief.

Length of Apprenticeship

All part time employees will serve a probationary period of 6 months to 24 months. During this time the probationary employee will hold the rank of Apprentice Part Time Fire fighter. The JAC may recommend the employee for a promotion to Part Time Firefighter/EMT-B upon successful completion of the 6 to 24 months probationary period or recommend termination at any time during the probationary period.
